Chester Mervin Humphrey died Friday, December 29, 2017 at CHI St. Luke’s Hospital in Houston, TX. Chester was born on September 24, 1947 to Clara Humphrey and Ernest Bryant Hill. He was a lifelong resident of Double Bayou, TX.

Chester worked for the Chambers County Sherriff’s Department in various capacities for many years before being elected as Chambers County Precinct 3 Constable – making him the first ever black elected official in Chambers County, winning his first election as a write-in candidate – and serving for 16 years. He had many passions in his life including cooking for his friends and family, working cattle and hunting – especially alligator hunting which he enjoyed for many years. Chester won many awards for his delicious bar-b-que and his home style cooking was widely known and praised.

Chester’s greatest passion in life, however, was his family who will cherish and carry on his legacy. Chester was preceded in death by his parents Clara and Ernest Bryant Hill, a brother Ernest “Duke” Hill, sisters Esther Ruth Hill and Dorothy Mae Hill, his adopted son Timothy Lyons and his former wife and longtime friend Mable Jewel Humphrey. He is survived by his children: Dion Humphrey and wife Clora Faye of Anahuac; Emma Toran and special friend Mark of Baytown; Chester V. Humphrey, Joseph Humphrey and wife Gloria and Justin Humphrey and wife Samantha, all of Double Bayou; Valerie Humphrey of Albany, Georgia; and Gloria Bush and Rhonda Wells of Colfax, LA. He is also survived by his sisters, Etta Maye Fontenot of Dallas, TX and Margaret Diamond of Hammond, LA, his godmother Creola Moore and his longtime companion Pauline Caballero. Chester will be remembered and will live on in the hearts of his numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren who were his pride and joys.

A gathering of Mr. Humphrey’s family and friends will begin at 9:00 a.m., with his funeral service to follow at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, January 6, 2018, at Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church, Felix Road, Double Bayou. His interment will follow at Martha Godfrey Cemetery, Double Bayou, under the direction of Broussard’s, 1605 North Major Drive, Beaumont.
