Edgar K. Sarrafian, M.D.

April 13, 1934 - September 23, 2020

Dr. Edgar Karnig Sarrafian, 86, passed away at his home in Beaumont, Texas, on September 23, 2020. He was born to Araxi and Karnig Sarrafian in Beirut, Lebanon (Armenian).

Edgar graduated from the American University of Beirut Medical School in 1960. He met and married the love of his life, Helga Pohlman (German), and then came to the United States for his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, Texas, followed by a fellowship in Gynecologic Oncology at MD Anderson Hospital and Tumor Institute at the University of Texas, Houston, and an externship at Brackenridge Hospital in Austin, Texas. He then moved to Beaumont, Texas, and began his solo practice in obstetrics and gynecology from 1966-1987, where he had privileges at St. Elizabeth, Women and Children, MASH, and Baptist. From 1987-1996, he practiced gynecology and became the Director of Clinics for UTMB Beaumont, Jasper, Port Arthur, Livingston, and Orange locations.

Edgar enjoyed and loved pursuing new knowledge in his field during his medical career, including introducing the In Vitro Fertilization Program, GIFT, to the Beaumont area. After years of dedicating his life to medicine and delivering over 6500 babies, he retired in 1996. He was a prolific painter, loved to travel with his family, a masterful bridge player, a connoisseur of classical music, and an avid stamp collector. Most of all, he will be remembered by his children, grandchildren, and extended family, who all adored him for his kindness, intelligence, and witty, dry sense of humor.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Helga, and his parents, Araxi and Karnig Sarrafian. He is survived by his three children, Tatyana Mainwaring (Brent Mainwaring, M.D.), Eric Sarrafian (Gabrielle), Amy Sarrafian-Donnelly; and his grandchildren, Peyton, Fallon, Carson, and Grayson Mainwaring.

The family would like to give special thanks to Riceland Hospice and his loving caregivers.

His cremation arrangements were handled through Broussard’s Crematorium under the direction of Broussard’s, 1605 North Major Drive, Beaumont.

There is a private family memorial planned for Dr. Edgar Karnig Sarrafian.

Dr. Sarrafian was my mother’s physician and delivered me many moons ago. She always spoke so highly of him. Prayers for your family.

Dr. Sarafian delivered both of my sons in the 70's. He was a good man of medicine; kind, compassionate; but he came alive in the delivery room showing an obvious joy for delivering babies! Blessings to all of you.

Your Dad delivered both of my kids. My son was one of the last babies he delivered. He was a wonderful doctor and as mentioned above, he loved being in the delivery room. I consider myself to have been very fortunate to have had him as my doctor for all those years. He was my only gym/ ob that I had ever used. When he retired I had to find a new one. Never have found one that compared to him.
