A real good friend and a great doctor. Scientifically curious,, which is the best you can ask for in a practicing physician, and smart. He put up with my ideas about medicine and always cured me anyway. We spent many nights just wandering around Destin Harbor in the water taxi,, smoking the good cigars he always brought. I'll always treasure those times. He would send me medicine halfway around the world when he knew I didn't trust the foreign doctors. I'd send him Cuban cigars in return. I didn't charge him for water taxi rides and he would forego the co-payments I owed at his practice.. Most of our consultations took place at a spare desk he kept out in the garage behind his office. My kind of doctor. My kind of friend......................Cap'n John

Shocked minutes ago toread the note on Dr. Toomey's office door. On my first visit in January 2016 he saved my life. I have looked forward to my next visit since then as he became like a younger brother. Will never forget him.

Cyntha, we had so much fun on the Rasta with Tom, didn't we.

Tom was my best man at our Springfield wedding in 1983. Linda and I sailed in his Thistle on Lake Peoria and again in the Pensacola harbor at night and enjoyed the plankton sparkling in the water. I 1986 we travelled to Port Arthur to sail and dance on the Rasta at night. We visited annually in Destin often staying on board the Rasta at the various slips he had before designing and supervising construction of that beautiful home that included an apartment for his mom, Jackie, in Destin Harbor. The rumor that tickled Tom was that his house had been built by Bet Middler. So many visits back then was to help Tom move past his last love affair. He told us when Linda asked why he had become a doctor he told Linda and me that if he could rebuild Harley Davidson motorcycles he could work on human bodies. Once at an old Springfield tavern, The Cracked Crock, with 20 foot ceilings where Tom and I like to shoot pool, Tom was using a crutch because his back had "gone out" climbed that long staircase and shot pool with one arm while hanging on to his crutch. We went to Key West and sailed 8 miles into the Atlantic to scuba on Sand Key and sailed back to the harbor in a full beam reach and sailed right between the two tourist sunset cruise ships with gapping mouthed tourists hanging over the rail to see us fly by. Tom was that guy who could do whatever he set his mind to. Through the years after Tom moved back to Lake Sabine area we lost track of each other until this past fall when I called Tom and we had a long conversation. Linda and I were so happy to learn from Tom he had met Violet in the Destin Hospital and they had been happily married for 13 years. But he had sold the Rasta. Recently discovering some old photos of the Rasta from our 1986 visit, I packaged them for mailing and discovered this obituary when I went online to find his office address in Nederland. Shocked and deeply saddened, I decided to mail the photos anyway, thinking maybe Violet might enjoy seeing those pictures from long before she and Tom met. I will miss my best man, "Ole Buddy Tom, dearly.
