Elga "Booie" Jackson

Elga Ora Jackson was born December 21, 1919 in Double Bayou, Texas.  She was the fifth (5th) child born to the union of Mr. Perry Essixic Jackson and Mrs. Dessie Ora Rivers Jackson.  Elga attended grade school in Double Bayou, Texas. She later graduated from Central High School in Galveston, Texas. 

Elga became a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church of Double Bayou during her early childhood. St. Paul was also known as the “Double Bayou School” where Elga attended grade school.  Subsequent to Elga completing her education, she volunteered her talents at St. Paul United Methodist Church faithfully supporting Vacation Bible School, serving as Sunday School Class Leader, serving as an Administrative Board Member, United Methodist Women Member, and Religious Book Club Member.  Elga also participated in St. Paul United Methodist Church’s Homecoming Programs, and Women’s Day Programs as a Historian.  Elga was a member of the Oak Island-Double Bayou Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, where she served as Communications Informant, a member of the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), Anahuac, Texas and Young At Heart, social organizations.  She truly enjoyed conversing with people. When not volunteering at St. Paul United Methodist Church, Elga worked as a General Manager of Jackson Grocery. Elga worked at this community store in Double Bayou for many years. She enjoyed her job simply because of the opportunity to meet and talk with people from near and far.  In her spare time, Elga raised cattle, visited her family and spent time playing with her nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, cousins and friends.  Several of her nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and younger cousins did not realize Elga’s age because of her young and jubilant spirit.   

Elga was preceded in death by; Perry Essixic Jackson, father, Dessie Ora Jackson, mother. Maude Jackson, Hazel Jackson Johnson, and Inez Jackson Lewis, sisters all of Anahuac, Texas; Lorraine Jackson White, sister of Galveston, Texas; and Perry G. Jackson, brother of Galveston, Texas.

Her in-laws also preceded her in death, Robert Lewis brother-in-law, Otis White, brother-in-law, Marguerite Jackson, sister-in-law, Louis Johnson, brother-in-law, and Ocie Jackson, brother-in-law.

Elga also known to her family as “Elgs,” “Aunt Elga,” “Booie,” and “Boo” is survived by Ida Lewis Ashford, Gloria Jackson McKinney, Cordell Green Lewis, and Beverly Douglas Lewis, nieces all of Houston, Texas; Beverly Jackson Brown, niece of Galveston, Texas; Phillip Jackson, nephew of Magnolia, Texas; and a host of Great nieces, nephews, Great, Great nieces, nephews, Great, Great, Great nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A gathering of Ms. Jackson’s family and friends will be from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., Friday, April 23rd, 2021, at St. Paul United Methodist Church, 338 Church Road, Double Bayou, Texas under the direction of Broussard’s, 2000 McFaddin Avenue, Beaumont. Funeral service will be 2:00 p.m., Saturday, April 24th, 2021, at St. Paul United Methodist Church, with interment to follow at Martha Godfrey Cemetery, Double Bayou, Texas.
