Betty L. Martel

July 19, 1934 - October 12, 2023

Betty L. Martel, 89, of Nome, died Thursday, October 12, 2023. She was born on July 19, 1934, in Devers, to Ardelia Dee Abshire and Elbert James DuBose, Sr.

Betty loved the Lord Jesus Christ and lived a Christian lifestyle, setting a beautiful example for others. She put all of her energy into being the best wife, mother, grandmother, sister and aunt. Her life was about serving others and taking care of those close to her, which began in childhood as she helped by caring for her younger siblings. Through her 89 years, her love and care continued for all of her siblings as they aged together, and needs changed; you could always count on her. She loved attending her kids and grandkids activities. She traveled many miles to show her support and cheer them on. Betty loved her church community and enjoyed years of not only service but activities and wonderful trips with her Nome Baptist Church: ‘Fun Bunch’. One of her specialties was making delicious pies that were expected at family and church functions. Two of her favorite hobbies were sewing and reading, especially many versions of the Bible. She was surrounded by loved ones when she passed and now rests safely in the arms of Jesus; reunited with many who went before her. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Survivors include her daughters, Carolyn Abney of Nome; Cathy Martel and her husband, Matt Lopez, of China; Patty Allison and her husband, Don, of College Station; and Mona Eckelman and her husband, Keith, of Livingston; daughter-in-law, Gay Martel, of Sour Lake; grandchildren, Dewayne Martel, II and his wife, Jonnine; Sommer Shackelford; Brent Abney and his wife, Rebecca; Natasha Kolander; Megan Brooks and her husband, Daniel; Kamri Garrison and her husband, Brady Lee; Byron Allison and his wife, Rachel; Sarah Johnson and her husband, Matt; Jacob Lopez; Lucas Lopez; Andrea Eckelman; and Kayse Horton and her husband, Russell; eighteen great-grandchildren; sister, Linda Martel and her husband, Grady, Jr.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Raymond Martel; son, Larry Dewayne Martel, I; siblings, Lucille Aldrich, Fay Mobley, Dorothy Ray, Elbert DuBose, Jr., Pete DuBose, Gerald DuBose, Geraldine Martel, and Loretta Lowe.

Special thanks to Adele, Christina, Kelci and Mikey of Altus Hospice of Beaumont. A sincere appreciation to her granddaughter, Sommer, for her care and guidance to the family in the final days and hours.

Billy said he bets that Miss Betty and Mr. Raymond are glad to be back together; they were always so close. What you girls did for your mother in her final years was just incredible. And your selfless showed in her. Every time I saw her she seemed to be happy, at peace, and feeling safe. Y’all committed and gave back those very things that our mothers give us. Peace be with you all.
