Faye Broussard Prejean

June 11, 1936 - January 14, 2024

Faye Broussard Prejean, 87, of Beaumont, died surrounded by family on Sunday, January 14, 2024. She was born on June 11, 1936, in Maurice, Louisiana to Ada Hebert and Jean Camille Broussard.

Faye graduated from Maurice High School in 1954.  She went on to graduate from Hotel Dieu School of Nursing in Beaumont in 1957 as an R.N.  Before retiring, Faye worked for Dr. Toomim, Hotel Dieu, St. Elizabeth, and MASH.

While at Hotel Dieu, she met the love of her life, Paul Prejean. In September 1959, they were married at St. Puis Catholic Church.  Soon after, they started their beautiful family and lived out their remaining years in Beaumont, which included many fun gatherings with family and friends.  On a double date with her husband Paul, she met who came to be her lifelong confidant, Mary Dibello. Their friendship would last up until Faye’s last day, they were the best of friends for 60+ years.

Even at 87, Faye made sure to keep her social calendar full. She loved playing bunco, dominos, going out to eat with friends, and when she could, traveling to Louisiana to see family.  She was blessed to have been able to travel to Europe and Canada as well.  She cherished the time she spent with her nine grandchildren, specifically at Christmas making cookies. She loved cooking her cajun food, especially gumbo; and if you knew her you knew her signature whistle, which she made great use of while watching her Astros, and numerous football teams. Working in her yard brought her great joy as well.

Faye also was a strong believer in volunteering, she devoted her time to many organizations around Beaumont namely Some Other Place, St. Anne and St. Anthony.  She enjoyed singing in the St. Anne Catholic Church Choir, weekly adoration, stuffing envelopes for the Diocese of Beaumont, and making St. Joseph’s alter cookies.  Additionally, she was a chairperson for the HDSN Scholarship committee and also Vice President of the Hotel Dieu Alumni Association.  Faye was a 52-year breast cancer survivor and participated in several local breast cancer awareness functions throughout those years.

She loved her family and friends dearly and cherished all those who were a part of her life, there were many, including her numerous nieces and nephews. The love she had for her siblings and their spouses ran deep, with many memories made over her 87 years. She and her dear sister, Alice, the last surviving sibling of the ten Broussard children, cherished their many years together since moving to Texas in the 1950s.

If you knew Faye, you knew how much her Catholic faith meant to her.  She devoted her life to the church, acts of service, and praying her rosary and devotionals daily.  She will leave a lasting impression on all who knew her and will be missed dearly.

Survivors include her children, Greg Prejean and his wife, Denise; Daryl Prejean; Yvette Prejean Marshall; Juliette Prejean Hearn and her husband, Skylor; and Monette Prejean Shaunty; grandchildren, Kelsey Prejean; Blaine Prejean; Jacob Prejean; Matthew Prejean and his wife, Kender; Reganne Marshall; Tatum Hearn; Aubry Hearn; Jordan Shaunty; and Jackson Shaunty; sister, Alice Schroder; sister-in-law, Louise Broussard and Claire Niven; and numerous other family members and special friends.

I had the privilege to know this sweet lady for 25+ years being her nurse. Ms Faye always had a smile and a kind word even when she was not feeling her greatest. I loved hearing the stories of her nursing career and how things have changed. We also said that the most important part of nursing is caring and compassion. Rest in peace, You have earned your wings. You will be missed Prayers for the family.

How blessed my husband and I were to know Faye and her wonderful family. As a young married couple , they were our neighbors but soon became family. So many wonderful memories were made living on Kohler in Beaumont. Memories that I will always cherish. I used to tell Faye it did not feel like Christmas until I received her box of homemade treats. For over twenty years she sent that box of treats to Houston for our family. God truly blessed us with her love, kindness and guidance.

Aunt Faye was the sweetest thing ever!! When traveling to Louisiana, she always made time for a stop in Scott to visit her brother, my dad, Lastie and his 7 children. She made a point to ask about each one of us and the happenings of our lives. She was my recent hero as I also battled breast cancer 5 years ago. She immediately called me when she heard of my diagnosis and told me if she could beat it 40 years ago, then so could I. She was right!! Such a beautiful soul! Well done good and faithful servant! Hug Mom and Dad for me. They loved you so very much, as did all of your family and Im sure all of those long tall Texans too. 😘

What a lovely tribute to a sweet, wonderful lady! I was close friends with the “twins,” as my own mom referred to them growing up, and I spent many a night and day at the Prejean home. Mrs. Prejean was always so kind to me, and I have fond memories of the entire family when visiting. I loved the feeling of a “big family,” as I was an only child. Mrs. Prejean created such a warm, loving home, and I too will miss her, although I hadn’t seen her in several years. Sending love with my whole heart to all of you!

Aunt Faye walked up the steps on her knees to the church on a hill of Saint Joseph’s ( St Andre’s incorrupted heart ) Basilica in Montreal in 2014 at age 77 on our trip to the Congres Mondial Acadien in New Brunswick. This was a difficult feat for anyone much less someone her age. She prayed for her loved ones on every step. Aunt Faye helped guide me to discern my career as a nurse. She welcomed me in her home for a week during many summers with my cousins Yvette and Juliette. She was a beautiful lady inside and out. May glorious perpetual light shine upon her now. May my dear dear cousins Gregory, Darrel, Yvette, Juliette and Monette know that they are not orphans cause they have all of us Cajun cousins here anytime they need.

What a beautiful family legacy Ms. Faye leaves through her beloved children and grandchildren.
    My condolences to you all.
