Fred Culver, Jr.

December 10, 1929 - June 16, 2023

Fred Culver, Jr., 93, of Sour Lake, died Friday, June 16, 2023. He was born on December 10, 1929, to Oma Grace Bileau Culver and Fred Aubrey Culver, in Muskogee, Oklahoma, and was a veteran of the United States Air Force.

Our Papaw has fought so hard since his massive heart attack 6 years ago. He battled 3 bouts of Covid. In 1994, he survived cancer. He most recently survived 2 stints on a ventilator, despite all the odds.

He served his country for 21 years and retired from his one and only job that he was loyal to his entire life here in Sour Lake at Citgo Pipeline. He has seen most of his friends pass on before him, as he has been fortunate enough to live 93 ½ years. Fred has lived all over the world. He brought his British ballerina from England in 1951 and married her in Oklahoma when they were 19 and 21 years old. Together they created a huge family; 9/17/2023 would have made 72 years of marriage for them!

Tuesday of this week, he shared so much thoughtfulness for God’s saving grace and forgiveness. He said he was so thankful for Jesus and that he would be with him soon. In the early morning hours of this past Friday, our Papaw saw Jesus in all His glory! We are sad, but his old body is new again. Breathing is easy! He can run! He is pain free. He is funnier and more handsome than ever!

Papaw was a provider. Beyond raising and providing for his own children, he made a lifelong impact on the granddaughter that he raised as well. I know he is waiting most likely “impatiently” for his Pat. She will see you again. We will see you later, Papaw. And no, we won’t forget you!

Survivors include his wife, Patricia Culver; children, Cheryl Culver and Teresa McNeel, both of Sour Lake; Michael Culver of Vidor; Melinda DeCaney and her husband, Gary, of Beaumont; and Melissa Simmons and her husband, Christopher, of Sour Lake; grandchildren, Kris, Adrian, Jennifer, Michael, Page, David, John, Jeremy, Stephanie, Kimberly, Sarah, Josh, Gregory, Brandon, Thomas, Alex, Ashley, Taylor, Logan, Cody, and Devon; thirty-eight great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; brother, Kenneth Culver and his wife, Irene, of California; and numerous extended family, friends, church family, and loved ones through the years.

He is preceded in death by his parents and two siblings.

A gathering of Mr. Culver’s family and friends will begin at 1:00 p.m., with his funeral service to follow at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, June 20, 2023, at Meadows Church of Christ, 9195 Dishman, Beaumont. His interment will follow at Rosedale Cemetery, Sour Lake, under the direction of Broussard’s, 1605 North Major Drive, Beaumont.

Memorial contributions may be made to Meadows Church of Christ for the Partners in Africa Fund, P.O. Box 5126, Beaumont, Texas 77726.
