Jerry “Old Goat” Lynn Brown

October 15, 1930 - June 10, 2017

Jerry Lynn “Old Goat” Brown, 86, went to be with the Lord on June 10, 2017 from his home in Nederland.

He is survived by his son W. Douglas Brown (Genie) of Madison, Wisconsin, and his daughters Debra Lynne Skinner (Brad) of Xian, China, and Linda Sue Cullums (Bob) of Beaumont. He is also survived by grandchildren Nathaniel Brown, Bryan Skinner, Danielle Williams, and Sarah English and great-grandchildren Jackson, Taryn, and Emmalyn. He is preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Madelyn Crane Brown, his parents and siblings.

Jerry was born on October 15, 1930, in DeRidder, Louisiana, to Benjamin Franklin Brown and Iberia Corley Brown.  At age 17, he moved to Beaumont where he drove a bus before building a family business, J. L. Brown Grocery and Market. In 1971, the family made their home in Nederland.

Jerry was active in First Baptist Church, Nederland, for 46 years and especially enjoyed his men’s Sunday School class. In retirement, he and Madelyn explored the country in their RV. To keep his mind sharp, he enjoyed daily crossword puzzles and played serious dominoes with friends.  His family remembers that Jerry lived a life full of service and humility.  He put others before himself.  He kept Juicy Fruit gum in his pocket for children; and he prepared barbeque for loved ones.

The family would like to thank the office staffs of Dr. John Lee and Dr. Richard Bowling and the staff of Kindred Hospice.

A gathering of Jerry’s family and friends will be from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., Monday, June 12, 2017, at Broussard’s, 505 North 12th Street, Nederland. His funeral service will be 10:00 a.m., June 13, 2017, at Broussard’s, Nederland, with his interment following at Oak Bluff Memorial Park, Port Neches. Dr. Jason Burden, pastor of First Baptist Church, Nederland will officiate.

Jerry delivered Meals on Wheels for about 6 years.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Jerry’s memory to Meals on Wheels Jefferson and Hardin Counties, https://www.seniormeals.org/, or by check to Meals on Wheels, 4590 Concord Street, Beaumont, Texas 77703.

“Life is short, and we do not have much time to gladden the hearts of those who travel with us, so be quick to love and make haste to be kind.”  –Henri-Frederic Amiel
