Melba Ann Grayson

April 19, 1936 - November 1, 2023

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Melba Ann Grayson on November 1, 2023.

Melba was born to Thomas Maurice Simmons and Elsie Jewel Saunders on April 19, 1936, the third of four children. She was raised in Junction, Texas, and after graduation from high school, she attended The University of Texas at Austin studying pre-Pharmacy. It was at UT that she met her husband and father of her two sons, Frank Grayson. The family lived briefly in Houston, Arizona and Japan until divorcing in 1965.

While raising her two sons in Texas, Melba lived in Austin and Killeen, moving to the Dallas-Fort Worth area after the birth of her first granddaughter. She worked for the Army and Corps of Engineers, retiring in 1998. Some years after, Charles and his family moved to the Florida panhandle. Melba followed and was shortly joined by the birth of her youngest grandchild, Wesley.

In the early 2000’s, Melba joined her sister Wanda in Beaumont, Texas, where for the last 20 years, they have kept each other company with trips and family visits.

Known for her sunny disposition and infectious humor, Melba possessed a heart so big that everyone she met felt as though they were part of her extended family. Her greatest accomplishment, as she would often share, was the raising of her sons and granddaughters.

Melba left behind a bounty of stories. She enjoyed writing poetry and children’s stories. And she especially loved watching her beloved UT Longhorns.

Melba is predeceased by her parents, Thomas and Elsie and brothers, James and Ronald Simmons. She is survived by her sister, Wanda Funchess; her sons, Charles and Bradley Grayson; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Rest peacefully, Melba. Your love knew no boundaries or conditions; it was pure and infinitely giving. The lessons you imparted of generosity of spirit and selfless affection will remain with us and continue to guide us. You will forever be missed.
