Carlo Joseph Busceme, Jr.

September 9, 1929 - January 4, 2024

Carlo Joseph Busceme, Jr. was born on September 9, 1929, to Josephine Maniscalco Busceme and Carlo Joseph Busceme, Sr., the last in the family of six children. Even though there was a large range in age among the siblings, they were very close, especially in their adult years, spending a lot of their time together at Crystal Beach, Texas, and on their boats in Galveston Bay.

Carlo often spoke fondly of the little house on Pennsylvania Ave. where he grew up.  Life was not always easy, they did not live a life of plenty, but the love that came from that small abode was huge, encompassing all who came within. Carlo filled his heart with that love and spread it to all he encountered in his life.

He met the love of his life his freshman year at St. Anthony High School. Charlene Fertitta was the one he wanted to spend the rest of his life with, and he made that happen as soon as possible!  After a slight detour to Louisiana to play baseball with his cousin, Frank Montalbano, he returned to Beaumont, began working for his soon-to-be father-in-law, Charles J. Fertitta, at Texas Coffee Company, and asked for Charlene’s hand in marriage. They married on September 4, 1950, and by 1955, their home was filled with three little boys, Carlo III, Anthony, and Gregory. Five years later, along came the last, Jo Rita.

Carlo remained with Texas Coffee Company as a devoted employee, starting with sweeping the warehouse, as he liked to remind us. He used his wit and personality as a top-notch salesman and his management skills as plant manager. Carlo retired as President of the company in 1996.

Charlene may have been the love of his life, but the “B-Hive” was very dear to his heart! The beach cabin at Crystal Beach was a haven for him and for all who were lucky enough to spend time there before it was taken in Hurricane Ike. A fisherman from the moment he could hold a fishing pole, Carlo spent many weekends on Galveston Bay looking for that next school of specs! Beach time was family time and many years were spent enjoying this special place with his children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews, extended family, and friends.

Life in a big family has its rewards and it has its trials. But Carlo faced all that life gave him with that special smile, unwavering faith, and his uncanny ability to tell a good joke. If he met you once, he never forgot your name. In his last years, he could pull up names of people that had crossed his path at any stage of his life. And he not only remembered the name, but he remembered the person as well.

Carlo relied on his Catholic faith and the peace that his beliefs gave him until the end. He grew up at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Beaumont and then became a member of St. Anne Church when he married Charlene. He was an active member of the parish, serving on the first Parish Council, and he was a daily Communicant until travel to the church became difficult. He supported St. Anne School and Msgr. Kelly High School as a parent and active participant in Booster Clubs and on the Kelly School Board. He was a member of the ACTS community of St. Anne Church, attending the first Men’s ACTS Retreat in the diocese. He spent time as a scheduled adorer in the Adoration Chapel. He was a life-time member of the Knights of Columbus, Council 951, Fourth Degree. He and Charlene were honored as Knight and Lady of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulcher for the Catholic Church by the Pope.

We are indebted to the ladies who have been dad’s constant companions and caretakers, Myra Hockless and Claudia Pena. Dad’s last years were comfortable and full of laughter because of these ladies. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Carlo is survived by his sons, Anthony Busceme, Sr. and his wife, Karie, and Gregory Busceme, Sr. and his wife, Sheila; his daughter, Jo Rita Lyle, and her husband, Steve; his grandchildren, Carmen Busceme and her wife, Desiree Guillory; Anthony Busceme, Jr. and his wife, Tricia; Carla Busceme; Gregory Busceme, Jr. and his wife, Jessica; Carlo Busceme IV and his wife, Larena; Michael Lyle; Olivia King and her husband, James; and his great-grandchildren, Austin Busceme, Charlize Busceme, Gregory Busceme III, Benjamin Busceme, and Charles Busceme.

Carlo is preceded in death by his wife, Charlene, and his son, Carlo Busceme III.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Anne Catholic Church, 2715 Calder Avenue, Beaumont, Texas 77702; St. Anne Catholic School, 375 North 11th Street, Beaumont, Texas 77702; Msgr. In the presence of every soul he encountered, Carlo didn’t just remember names; he etched them into his heart. His ability to connect on such a personal level was a testament to his kindness and genuine care for others. He leaves behind a legacy not only as a successful businessman but as someone who valued each person he met. May his warmth and compassion continue to resonate within us all.

    Stephan Malick says:

    Greg, JoRita and Anthony,
Your Dad was a kind and gracious man. I met him at the Art Studio years ago and I used to see him and your Mother at St. Anne’s and he always remembered my name, Stephan — not Stephen. That always meant a lot to me because he had no reason to remember it. As years went by he always had time for conversation and to visit. He always had a twinkle in his eyes and I always admired how your parents supported one another. They were always so cute together. Our condolences to your family. — The Malicks

    Anthony, Greg, and Jo Rita,
We are very saddened by your loss, but feel so blessed to have known such a wonderful man. I have many fond memories of him fishing with us on East Bay, where he would shout, “Come on, sweet lips!” to attract speckled trout, but I think the main benefit was keeping up our energy level when the fish weren’t biting!
Mary and I will not be able to attend the funeral due to medical appointments, but will be there in spirit and will say a rosary for him. May he be celebrating in heaven with all of our dear friends and family who have gone before us!
    Love, Dan & Mary

Carlo loved to tell the story of how as a 16 year old, he saved my life. I was an infant and swallowed a piece of wax when he happened to come by the house. It was raining and my father had the family car at work. He wrapped me up and put me in the basket of his bike and ran me to my dad, who brought me to the hospital.
Thank you Carlo, I will love you forever!

    Anthony Fasulo says:

Dear Busceme Family: I am very sorry to hear of Carlo’s passing. He touched an untold number of people in such a positive way over his long life. My dad had a great deal of respect for him as did I. I can honestly say that I never heard anyone have anything negative to say about him. I attended Mass at St. Anne’s for a number of years, and I generally sat near him and the family. We often talked a little, and I affectionately nicknamed him “The Godfather”. That always brought a big smile to his face. I can honestly say that I have never met a nicer man.
