Roxie Iona Williams

February 27, 1918 - August 10, 2021

Roxie Iona Williams, 103, of Winnie, died Tuesday, August 10, 2021. She was born February 27, 1918, in Woodson, to Annie Jane Shipley Sanders and Elisha Sanders. She owned a nursery school for many years. Iona loved gardening, especially lilies, being with family, cooking, and making delicious bread. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Stowell and has been in the community since 1959.

She is survived by her daughter, Lounette Thornton, of Stowell; daughter-in-law, Gay Williams of Anahuac; son-in-law, Tom Jay and wife, Deborah, of Jacksonville; grandchildren, Roy Jay of Charleston, South Carolina; Dianna Frederick and her husband, Shane, of Stowell; Andy “Buck” Thornton and his wife, Janet, of Stowell; and Shellie Loria of Anahuac; great-grandchildren, Daniel Loria and his wife, Samantha, Emily Ashley and her husband, Kenny, David Loria, Sarah Loria, Lee Thornton, Aden Thornton, Mallory Frederick, and Drew Frederick; great-great-grandchild, Rendan Loria; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband of seventy-two years, Johnnie Williams; brothers, Estes Sanders, Elton Sanders, and Glenn Sanders; daughter, Louise Jay; son, Johnnie “Bob” Williams; grandson, Nathan Williams; and son-in-law, Andy L. Thornton.

A gathering of Mrs. Williams’ family and friends will be from 6:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., Saturday, August 14, 2021, at Broussard’s, 134 West Buccaneer Drive, Winnie. Her funeral service will be 4:30 p.m., Sunday, August 15, 2021, at First Baptist Church of Stowell, 117 Van Ostrand Lane, Stowell, with a committal to follow at the Thornton Family Cemetery, Stowell.
