James “Buggar” Nett

January 2, 1933 - July 13, 2023

James “Buggar” Nett, age 90, died Thursday, July 13, 2023, at Oxford Grand Assisted Living and Memory Care, McKinney. He was born January 2, 1933, in Sour Lake, Texas, to late parents Lillie Dell Means Nett and George Washington Nett, of Sour Lake.

James was a family man. He adored his late wife, Shirley Jean, and took care of her until she passed two years ago. His granddaughter, Hailey (Nett) Bagwell and her husband, Trevor, cared for them both after they moved to Dallas in the Fall of 2020.

James was a man of God and was strongly rooted in his faith. He was a member of Our Lady of Victory Church in Sour Lake where he served on the Knights of Columbus and also greeted members with a warm smile on Sunday mornings.

When he was in high school at Sour Lake High, he met his wife, Shirley Jean Thibadeaux. They began dating at Lamar Tech. They were married June 26, 1955, at Our Lady of Victory Church. Together they built a beautiful life and became parents to Douglas A. Nett, their only child.

Through 67 years of marriage, they became a pillar of dedication for younger generations in the family and set the bar for what a devoted, Christlike marriage looks like.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Lillie and George Nett; his brother, George Nett, Jr.; sisters, Livena Happy Watson, Vidamerle Fairchild, and Mary Pauline Abney; his wife, Shirley Jean Nett; son, Doug Nett; and daughter-in-law, Kathleen Nett.

He is survived in death by his granddaughter, Hailey (and family); his sister-in-law, Lula Bell White; along with several nieces and nephews.

A gathering of Mr. Nett’s family and friends will be from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., with a Rosary recited at 6:00 p.m., Friday, July 21, 2023, at Broussard’s, 1605 North Major Drive, Beaumont. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, July 22, 2023, at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church, 225 West Barkley, Sour Lake. His interment will follow at Rosedale Cemetery, Sour Lake.

    Bonnie Greak Whitehead says:

Booger was one of the finest man that I have ever known. He loves Shirley and Doug so much. He always felt like part of the family. Whooop-EEEE.

    Mickey Thibodeaux says:

I was only 6 years old when we were introduced to Shirley Jeans Beau, at a Fathers Day celebration in Church Point. Needless to say Bugger fit in like a long lost cousin from the old country. As kids we were warned that he could hoop and holler like a seasoned war General by our Sour Lake cousin Byron Ellison. Over the years since 1954 we would always await his yearly presence at our families get together. What a treat it was to grow up and have meaningful conversations with this righteous man who always took time to greet us and demonstrate his East Texas Holler.

    Judi Benoit says:

One of the dearest men who has ever lived.
I’m so thankful he was part our family for so long.
    We loved you.
