John “Johnny” K. Barlow

May 14, 1945 - August 16, 2023

John Kenneth Barlow, 78, died Wednesday, August 16, 2023, at Lowcountry Community Hospice House in Summerville, South Carolina. Johnny was born May 14, 1945, in Beaumont, Texas, to Patsy Ruth Williams and Johnnie Benjamin Barlow. He married Phyllis Bairrington in 1971, and they had two children, Shad and Christian. Johnny married Sally McGee in 2002 in Galveston, Texas. Together they have welcomed many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Among other things, Johnny loved golf. He and his family designed, built, owned, and operated several golf courses in the Beaumont area. Johnny was the SLC medalist in 1965, and he and his team won the NCAA College Division championship in 1967. Johnny was inducted into the Lamar University Cardinal Hall of Honor in 1990.

Johnny was a man whose kindness knew no bounds and whose gentleness touched the lives of all who knew him. His loss leaves a void that can never be filled, but his memory will forever be etched in our hearts. He had an innate ability to connect with people on a deeper level, forging friendships that lasted a lifetime. His friendships were a testament to his character, as he treated everyone with respect, empathy, and understanding. Johnny taught us the beauty of slowing down, appreciating life’s simple pleasures, and nurturing the bonds that truly matter.

    Silvestre Romero says:

John Barlow was a very kind man and a fierce competitor. I met him in Brownsville, Tx where he was the golf pro and golf instructor. He did everything plus he did play an exceptional great game. He personally helped my wife and I buy our first car. He co-signed for my ’74 Maverick Ford. He trusted that I would pay, I did. I have fond memories of him, especially his sense of humor and again, his kindness to a teenage Mexican boy… Ive thought of him often and even reached out to him but never made contact. (Psalms 23:6)

    Robert Foote says:

Johnny treated me like a son. My dads death mad a impact on me and he kept me on the course.
