lawrence lynd

January 11, 1927 - February 16, 2017

Lawrence “Pops” Lynd, 90, of Beauxart Gardens, died Thursday, February 16, 2017. He was born on January 11, 1927, in Port Arthur, to Gertrude Grinstead Lynd and Thomas Lynd.

Pops was a United States Army veteran that served in World War II. His passions in life were woodworking, making furniture, but most of all, loving and spending time with his family. He was a man with few friends because everyone he met became family. Pops was more than a father, brother, or grandfather, he was everyone’s friend and to many, he was more. He was a hero! He was a good, kind, generous, loving husband. To his daughter, he was the greatest father who would give the shirt off his back, even when he didn’t have much. There is no greater father than Pops. He will be loved and missed for the rest of our lives. Pops’ greatest riches in life was not money; it was the love and courtesy he gave others. He impacted more lives in one lifetime than most would do in ten life times. Pops was also an avid Cowboy’s fan. Every Sunday you could hear him yelling at JePry. Even through their losing years, he stayed loyal. That was one of his greatest attributes, his loyalty. As much as he loved the Cowboy’s, nothing matched his love for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren; they were his world and he was theirs. There are not many men like him in the world and there will never be one as great as Pops.

Survivors include his wife of sixty-six years, Irene Lynd; daughter, Pam Gilchriest; favorite grandchildren, Chad Smith, Cory Smith and his wife, April, Davy Gilchriest and his wife, Anna, Nick Gilchriest and his wife, Lisa, Casey Smith and his significant other, Katie, Heath Gilchriest and his wife, Crystal, and Chayne Smith and his significate other, Kaleigh; precious great-grandchildren, Taryn, Connor, Caden, Kamden, Kallie, Cadence, Austin, Karsyn, Tristan, and Zoie; son-in-law he loved as his own, Charles Smith; and a host of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Gertrude Lynd; and his daughter, Wendy Smith.

A gathering of Pops’ family and friends will be from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m., with a Rosary recited at 4:00 p.m., Sunday, February 19, 2017, at Broussard’s, 505 North 12th Street, Nederland. His funeral service will be 11:00 a.m., Monday, February 20, 2017, at Broussard’s, Nederland, with his interment to follow at Memory Gardens of Jefferson County, Nederland.
