Mary Helen Ener

July 25, 1929 - April 30, 2018

Mary Helen Kellam Ener, 88, of Beaumont died Monday, April 30, 2018. A native of Beaumont, she was born on July 25, 1929, the daughter of Mae Hatcher Kellam and Henry Hugh Kellam.

She graduated from Beaumont High in 1946. After attending Lamar University and University of North Texas, she graduated from Sam Houston State University in 1978. Mary worked at Gulf States Utilities for ten years and continued her education after her children were in school. Growing up, she was a Camp Fire Girl, played the piano, cello, took dance from Judith Sproule, and sang with the Melody Maids. After graduating high school, she attended music classes in Boston, Massachusetts. Mary worked as a teacher’s aide then as a first-grade teacher at Anderson Elementary in Conroe ISD. She retired from Lumberton ISD after teaching fifth grade math for thirteen years. She enjoyed playing in many different Bridge Clubs over the years, sewing, quilting, and a variety of hand-work crafts. Mary was an active member of North End Baptist Church, where she enjoyed teaching children’s Sunday school for many years. She was also a Docent at the McFaddin-Ward House after she retired.

Survivors include her husband of sixty-two years, Norman W. Ener, Jr.; son, Wesley Ener and daughter, Suellen Ener; granddaughters, Jamie Young Beck, Dr. Elizabeth Ener, and Rachel Ener; great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and special brother and sister-in-law, Paul and Maurine Behrens.

She is preceded in death by her parents; sister, Bernice; and brothers, Curtis and Harry.

A gathering of Mrs. Ener’s family and friends will begin at 10:00 a.m., with her funeral service to follow at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, May 2, 2018, at Broussard’s, 1605 North Major Drive, Beaumont. A graveside service will follow at 3:00 p.m. at Hemphill City Cemetery, 276 South Texas Street, Hemphill.
