Shearon Kay Peterson

February 28, 1957 - December 25, 2023

Shearon Kay Peterson was born Shearon Kay Baker on February 28, 1957, in Chattanooga, Tennessee. She died early Christmas morning, 2023.

Shearon was an easy child. All her mother had to do to keep her from running off was remove her shoes and put her on the sidewalk. She wouldn’t stray because she didn’t like the feel of grass on her bare feet.

Shearon moved with her mom and stepdad to Beaumont, Texas in 1980 and worked as a dental assistant for Dr. E.J. White. Assisting in a dental procedure, she met patient Tommy Peterson. It was love at first bite. They married in 1981 and welcomed their son, Keith, in 1984. Shearon was a loving wife and mother, as well as a great cook. She was blessed with a remarkable mother’s instinct and intuition. She was keenly aware of her son Keith’s emotions and always had the right message for him at the right time.

Shearon loved the outdoors, especially the beaches in Texas and Florida. She paid close attention to the weather for these excursions and proudly earned the label, Miss Accuweather.

In the early 1990’s, Shearon began volunteering in local schools and worked as an aide for a young boy who was profoundly disabled. She showered him with love and attention and discovered her passion for caring for young children in need of love. In the early 2000’s Shearon began working as a teacher in a Mother’s Day out program at a local church. This was her niche, working mainly with three and four-year olds. Her fun side really took over with these children. She wore costumes, goofy glasses, funny hats, fake teeth and boas, using blinking lights and megaphones to get the children’s attention and turning off the classroom lights when the students weren’t listening. She loved the children and her fellow workers, and they loved Shearon.

Shearon was always there for the underdog and never sought praise or attention for her loving, giving ways. She made sure her car had in reserve several care packages she had put together for the homeless, and she always had goodies for her medical providers and their staff. She often took in stray dogs and cats, which she nurtured and found homes for. She was a relentless worrier, but her worries were about other people and animals. She was not at the top of her own worry list.

For the last year Shearon endured painful and debilitating physical issues. She was a trooper through it all. During this hard time, she had the loving assistance of Tess, Maria, Flo, Barbara and Veronica. Shearon cherished her relationship with these special ladies.

Shearon is preceded in death by her mother, Maxine Gupton, and her father, Charles Baker. She is survived by her husband, Tommy Peterson; son, Keith Peterson; brother, Terrell Baker; her four sisters-in-law and their husbands; and countless nieces and nephews and their children. She is also survived by her special pups, Lily and Big Buddy Lucky Dog.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made in Shearon’s memory to the Humane Society of Southeast Texas, 2050 Spindletop Avenue, Beaumont, Texas 77705 or the charity of your choice.

A gathering of Mrs. Peterson’s family and friends will begin at 10:00 a.m., with her memorial service to follow at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, January 3, 2023, at Broussard’s, 2000 McFaddin Avenue, Beaumont. Her cremation arrangements were handled through Broussard’s Crematorium.
