Sylvester Joseph Mence

April 19, 1925 - February 13, 2017

Sylvester Joseph “SJ” Mence passed away peacefully at the Heritage Manor Veterans Home in Shreveport, Louisiana, on Monday, February 13, 2017, two months shy of his 92nd birthday. SJ was born in Lake Charles, Louisiana on April 19, 1925, and lived most of his life in Beaumont and Houston, Texas. He was a WWll Veteran, serving in the Pacific with the U.S. Army.

He is survived by his loving sister, Gloria Mence (Merriman) Edwards; nieces, Ginger Ells and Pepper Daniel; and nephews Tom Merriman, David Mence, and Kyle Mence. He was also loved by many great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins. Mr. Mence is preceded in death by his parents, Dominic and Elizabeth Mence; his brother, Pete D. Mence; his great nephew, Bo Huddleston.

A graveside service will be held at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, in Beaumont, Texas, on Thursday, February 16, 2017, at 1:00 p.m., with Father Anthony Paulose of Our Lady of the Assumption Church officiating. Box 1629, Beaumont, Texas 77704. “Snookie” was a treasured Uncle, Brother and Friend to many, and we will miss him.
