Thomas Martin Cahal

October 3, 1958 - June 16, 2018

The kindest heart of all stopped beating on June 16th, 2018 when Tommy Cahal, Jr. lost his battle with cancer. Born October 3, 1958 in Nederland, TX to Thomas Martin Cahal, Sr. and Sally Smith Tomat. Tommy spent his youth in East Texas and was a graduate of Nederland High School and Lamar University.

Following graduation, he moved to Austin where he worked for Capstone Management for the last 25 years. He met his wife, Nancy, in 2004. A voracious reader, he liked nothing better than losing himself in a well written book. A lifelong Houston Astros fan, he was delighted to be able to attend one World Series Game in 2017 at Minute Maid Park. He remarked upon the diagnosis of lung cancer: “Well at least I lived long enough to see them win the World Series.” Besides reading and baseball, Tommy enjoyed travel and was an accomplished photographer. Always young at heart, he enjoyed animated movies and had a particular fondness for the Minions.

Possessing a kind and loving nature, no one who met Tommy was the poorer for it. His warmth and generosity touched everyone who knew him and many who never had the pleasure. He embraced his numerous nieces and nephews and treated them as though they were his own children. The most generous heart of all continued to give even in death, being able to donate his corneas to the San Antonio Eye and Tissue Bank. One can only hope that the recipient sees the World with the same sense of wonder.

He is preceded in death by his father Thomas Martin Cahal, Sr and is survived by his wife Nancy Hurt Cahal of San Antonio; Mother Sally Tomat of Morristown, TN; Step-Mother Edie Cahal of Nederland, TX; and siblings Stacey Tullier of Beaumont, William Michael Cahal of Nederland, James “Robb” Cahal of Nederland, Marco Tomat of Morristown, TN and Stephen Tomat of Shannon, NC.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the charity of your choice. It’s the Tommy thing to do.

A gathering of Mr. Cahal’s family and friends will be from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., Friday, June 22, 2018, at Broussard’s, 505 North 12th Street, Nederland. His graveside service will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, June 23, 2018, at Oak Bluff Memorial Park, Port Neches, with Ryan Cahal, Kylee Tullier, Shane Cahal, Conor Cahal, Aaron Tullier, and Roy Hurt as honorary pallbearers.

.I enjoyed viewing the vacation photos Tommy and Nancy took each year, but my favorite is a recent one of Tommy in a Viking hat! My condolences to the family and pray that you will find comfort in your special memories of Tommy.

I remembers Thomas as a very nice person who always had a smile on his face, as a former class mate of NHS Class of 77. Prayers are with his wife and all his family for their loss! His soul now lives with Christ where he lives in peace!

Great high school memories of making the great escape at lunch in Tommy's car to enjoy the Pizza Inn buffet. Tommy was the roadrunner to Mr. Allen's Acme Inc. coyote, only ever caught once when we got back to school a "little" late.

I graduated with this fine man although I only remember him as a boy. Our lockers were always near each other. He was one of the sweetest kindest guys in school . I wish he had known how much I thought of him. I never saw him again after Highschool. Sincerely sorry for this families great loss.
