Leanna Martin, 84, of Winnie, died June 26, 2024. She was born on October 31, 1939, in Opelousas, Louisiana, to Lena and Rodney Guillory. She is survived by daughters, Lori Martin and Carolyn Leday, and her husband, J.D Leday, Jr.; sons, Joseph Martin and his wife, Debra, Allen Martin, Arthur Martin, Larry Martin; seventeen grandchildren; and twenty-four great-grandchildren. Leanna is preceded in death by her parents and her daughter, Sarah Martin. Florence Mary Mason, 92, of Winnie, died Sunday, June 23, 2024. She was born March 24, 1932, in Zavala, to Lorelia Marie Landry and Jesse Christian. Florence was an avid reader and enjoyed cooking, playing cards on a Sunday afternoon. She loved having family and friends over. She is survived by daughters; Virginia Barge, and her husband, Butch, of Etoil, Texas, Becky Johnson, and her husband, David, of Temple, Texas, Vanessa Atkinson, and her husband, Jerry, of Coldspring; eight grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; and numerous great-great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Ronald “Ronnie” Glynn Hatch, a loving husband, father, and friend, on June 21 at the age of 78. Ronnie passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family. Born on July 14, 1945, Ronnie was known for his unwavering dedication to his family, his hard work, and his kind spirit. He is survived by his beloved wife, Sherrye, who was his partner and confidante for thirty-three years. Together, they built a prosperous business and a life filled with love and cherished memories. Dorothy Jean Baker, 86, of Church Point, Louisiana, died June 20, 2024. She was born on May 14, 1938, in Palestine, Texas, to Nanny Mae Batchelor and Ferris Batchelor. Raul (Coach) Espinosa, 84, was residing at Rockport Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Rockport, Texas at the time of his death. Before moving to Rockport, he lived in Winnie, Texas for 49 years. Raul died Saturday, June 15, 2024. He was born on November 12, 1939, in Brownsville, Texas, to Ramon and Antonia Espinosa. He graduated from Pan American College with a Bachelor of Arts. Jennifer Leanne Darwin, 53, of Crystal Beach, died Tuesday, June 11, 2024. She was born on March 12, 1971, in Phoenix, Arizona, to her father and Carla Howard Minyard. Jennifer went into the Army in 1988 at 17 years old. She spent nine months in Desert Storm before returning home and was honorably discharged in 1991. She and Steve married in 1995 after dating only 8 months. They remained best friends for 30 years. Jennifer was the Matriarch of her family. Debra Diane Dale, 70, of Hamshire, died June 9, 2024. She was born on October 12, 1953, in Ballinger, Texas, to Maxine and C.W. Hendricks. Joanne Elizabeth Flowers, 80, of Winnie, died Tuesday, May 28, 2024. She was born on October 27, 1943, in Earlsboro, Oklahoma, to Sarah and William McFarland. Charles Earl Cole, 87, of Crystal Beach (formerly of Bevil Oaks) passed away unexpectedly, yet peacefully, at home on Saturday, May 25, 2024. Charles was born on June 15, 1936, to R.V. and Edna Cole of Nederland, Texas. He was a proud and active member of the Nederland High School Class of 1954. Following high school, he attended the Marion Military Institute in Marion, Alabama and subsequently enlisted in the U.S. Navy and attended the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. Following his Honorable Discharge, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserves. After his time in the reserves, while living in Beaumont, Charles met a young nursing student and love of his life, Carlis Katherine Danna. They married in November 1962 and were preparing to celebrate their 62nd wedding anniversary this year. Anne Adams Willis, of Crystal Beach, Texas, was born in Beaumont, Texas on October 28, 1946, and died May 13, 2024, after a lengthy illness. Anne was much loved and respected as a 62-year resident of the peninsula.  She graduated from High Island High School in 1964.  She was a secretary for the original Crystal Beach incorporated city.  While she was there, G.I. “Swede” Smith encouraged her to get her real estate license.  As an indefatigable advocate of all things Bolivar Peninsula, she was the co-founder of the Texas Crab Festival, now in its 39th year, and helped establish scholarships that thrive today.   She was also a co-founder of the Lighthouse Mardi Gras Krewe and will forever be known as “Queen Anne.”  As the former owner of Swede’s Real Estate for over 20 years, she developed the most successful real estate business on the Peninsula.  She served as President of […]

John Keith Stanley, 65, of High Island, died Saturday, April 6, 2024, at Houston Methodist Clear Lake Hospital. He was born May 21, 1958, in Thibodaux, Louisiana, to Betty Jane Knott Stanley and John Herbert Stanley. John Keith Stanley is the proud owner of Cottontail Express. Lynda Carol Bobino, 81, of High Island, died Monday, March 4, 2024. She was born on January 25, 1943, to Lottie Marie and Lee Roy Turner. Lynda loved doing anything outside, including gardening and fishing. Anyone was welcome at her home at any time. She enjoyed dancing in her early years but recently she has been enjoying word searches and jigsaw puzzles. She volunteered for most of the things that happened in High Island. If anyone ever needed anything, she was always available. She retired after 26 years of service from High Island I.S.D on May 31, 2003. Evelyn Hazel Borel Porter, 76, passed away on February 24, 2024, in her home in Hemphill, Texas, surrounded by her family. She was born on November 3, 1947, to Louis Alcide and Hazel Borel. Evelyn met the love of her life in kindergarten. According to her mother, Evelyn came home the first day of school and said she met the boy she was going to marry.  She did just that on August 4, 1967.  Evelyn and Paul Porter were happily married for 56 years. Leon Hopson was born on August 10, 1950, in Baytown, Texas, to Red and Eva Hopson, and, along with his three sisters, spent most of his life in Hamshire, America. Leon grew up in the shadow of the oilfield and, at the early age of 17, began his career as a deckhand on oil rigs, both on land and in the Gulf of Mexico.  He worked his way through the various rig positions until he became a directional driller.  After working with his father and on his own for many years, in 2003, Leon joined with two friends to create Crescent Directional.  He retired from Crescent in early 2016, and devoted himself as a full time resident at his barn, polishing his tractors, and harassing his friends, of which there were many. Bobby Little, 71, of Fannett passed away at his home Sunday, February 18, 2024. He was born on September 3, 1952, in Port Arthur, to Marvin and Maxine Little. He has two little brothers, Marvin Little, Jr. and Nelson Little. Bobby graduated from Nederland High School, and later worked as a cost tracker for Koch Industries for over 20 years. Robert Benjamin Franklin, Sr., 93, of Hamshire, died Friday, January 26, 2024. He was born on July 22, 1930, in Rockport, to Lula and Mack Franklin. Robert was a supervisor at the Goodyear plant in Beaumont for over 30 years. Survivors include his son, Robert B. Beverly “Belle” Syphrett Weaver passed away January 17, 2024 at the age of 92. She was born in Devers, Texas, on March 12, 1931 to Charles & Helen Bonin Prevost. Belle was a lifelong Chambers County resident and attended Anahuac High School. She married D.W. “Dub” Syphrett and had two children, Daniel W. Syphrett Ill of Stowell and Helen DanElla McCarty of Liberty. They were married 24 years before he died. After the passing of Dub Syphrett, Belle enlarged her family when she married James Earl Weaver. This added two sons, Jimmy Weaver of Anahuac, and Gary Weaver of Hankamer. Michael Richard Kahla passed away on January 17, 2024, in Winnie, Texas. Born on August 27, 1942, to Erwin and Eula (Harrington) Kahla, he graduated from East Chambers High School in 1960. Although he initially pursued college for three years, he chose to step out and assist his parents at home. In 1963, he was drafted into the Army, where he dedicated his service. Following his military tenure, Michael ventured into entrepreneurship, establishing his own construction company. Later in life, he discovered joy in residing in Mexico, where he spent many fulfilling years. In 2019, he returned to Winnie, making it his home until his passing. He leaves behind his daughter, Nicole Colvin and her husband, Zac, as well as his cherished grandchildren: Colton, Carson, Cash, Max, and Braxton. Doris Chambers Hargraves was born in a boxcar in Nancy, Texas, on May 12, 1925, to her parents, James Talmadge and Grace Best Chambers. She spent her early childhood years in the Rockland, Texas area surrounded by many aunts, uncles and cousins. When she was a young teenager, her father went to work for Humble Oil and the family moved to Goosecreek, near Baytown, where she also had many fond memories. During her high school years, the family relocated to Tenaha, Texas, where her father owned several telephone exchanges. Survivors include his children, Roland Vigers, Jr. and wife, Evelyn; Luciana Rae Hutchings and husband, Calvin; and Kevin Carrier and wife, Shonda; grandchildren, Brian Vigers, Darius Hutchings, Calvin Hutchings, Jr., and Kevin Carrier, Jr.; great-grandchildren, Allannah Carrier; siblings, Milton Vigers, Rose Jean Citizen, Jean Theresa Vigers, Barbara Dick, Gervis Vigers; and godchild, Shirley Poullard Johnwell. He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Janie Marie Vigers; and siblings, Carlton Vigers and Tolton Vigers. Mr. Vigers’ cremation arrangements will be handled through Broussard’s Crematorium, Beaumont, under the direction of Broussard’s, 134 West Buccaneer Drive, Winnie.
