Victor Arnim Wessels, Jr., 74, of Dayton died Sunday, June 23, 2024. He was born on January 16, 1950, in Houston, to Muriel Jeanne Edworthy Wessels and Victor Arnim Wessels, Sr. Victor was part owner of Wessel Machine Works along with his father and brother. He worked for the City of Houston’s Metro system as a bus driver and later supervisor where he retired after many years. Victor was a member of the Dayton Volunteer Fire Department He enjoyed living away from the city and residing on his rural acreage where at one time he had horses and cattle with Jolynn who preceded him in death in 2007. He enjoyed researching any topic as well as visiting with friends over lunch. He is someone who was always available whenever you needed him. He will be greatly missed. Joe Lynn Overstreet, 66, of Kountze died Friday, June 14, 2024. He was born on August 24, 1957, in Kountze, to Betty Norman Overstreet and Walter Ray Overstreet. Survivors include his son, Ryan Hargrove and his wife, Kimberly, of Lumberton; grandson, Case McCoy Hargrove; siblings, Troy Daniel Overstreet of Kountze; Walter Overstreet and his wife, Debbie, of Zavalla; JoAnn Duncan and her husband, Roy Glenn, of Wildwood; and Kim Overstreet of Wildwood; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. Ruth Tate, 89, of Sour Lake, died Monday, June 10, 2024.  She was born on March 8, 1935, in Port Arthur, to Della Adaway Sangwin and Leonard Sangwin. Survivors include her daughter, Evelyn Brown and her husband, Arthur, of Sour Lake.  She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, George Albert Tate, Sr.; and children, Glenda Fay Wright, Charles Murphy Tate, and George Albert Tate, Jr. A gathering of Mrs. Tate’s family and friends will be 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m., Saturday, June 15, 2024, at Broussard’s, 530 West Monroe, Kountze.  Her graveside service will follow at 1:00 p.m., at Pine Ridge Cemetery, Sour Lake.

Rose Lagina Smart, 51, of Kountze, died Sunday, June 2, 2024. She was born on August 19, 1972, in Beaumont, to Margie Nell Broom Riley and Jerry Paul Riley. Benny Earl House, 80, of Kountze, passed peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving children on Tuesday, May 28, 2024. He was born on September 9, 1943, in Beaumont, to Vanda Aline Gaines House and Willie Neal House, Sr. Mr. House served in the U.S. Army where he did two tours in Vietnam. Gerald Glynn Loper, Sr., 98, of Sour Lake, died Monday, May 20, 2024. He was born on July 3, 1925, in Marquez to Edna Mabel Smith Loper. Gerald worked for Sun Oil as a Production Engineer Foreman for 38 years. He then went on to be the Justice of the Peace in Precinct 7 of Sour Lake for 13 years. Dennis Walter McDonald, 91, of Village Mills, died Wednesday, May 1, 2024. He was born on July 30, 1932, in Galveston, to Margurite Pix McDonald and Augustus E. McDonald.  Dennis proudly served his country in the United States Army. He lived in Wildwood for over thirty years and was a member of Wildwood/Village Mills Methodist Church.  Dennis was an avid golf player. Davey Eugene Smith, 76, of Kountze, died Thursday, April 25, 2024. He was born on March 26, 1948, in Port Arthur, to Gloria Pinell Smith and Claude Dawson Smith, Sr. Davey was a proud veteran of the United States Army, where he served in the Vietnam War.  He had many hobbies over his life. In his younger years he enjoyed traveling, painting, and photography. Davey enjoyed writing adventure stories where his daughter was the main character. Gardening was a big part of Davey’s life, and he was a member of the Jefferson County Master Gardeners.  In his free time, he spent many hours woodworking and building cannons. Dr. Robert John Vokurka, PhD, was born June 12, 1948, to John and Charlotte Vokurka of Wheaton, Illinois. He was a naturally inquisitive and bright child who excelled in school and enjoyed following Chicago’s professional sports franchises, especially the Cubs and the Bears. He loved American history and was a patriot of a bygone age when decency to your fellow Americans was more important than getting your way all the time. He talked fondly all his life of family vacations fishing on Michigan’s lakes. While at Wheaton Central High School he participated in the high school band and graduated in 1964. He continued his education at Albion College, earning a Bachelor of Arts in 1968. Jimmy F. Shifflett, known as “Energy Pawpaw” and simply Pawpaw, passed away peacefully at his home in Kountze, on December 17, 2023, at the age of 81. He was born on July 6, 1942, in Orange, Texas, to Helen Hales Shifflett and Joe Shifflett. Jimmy was a devoted husband of 45 years, a loving father, and a cherished grandfather. He cared deeply about his family and community, always guided by a strong moral compass that led him to fight for what was right. After serving in the United States Army actively from 1959 to 1962, Jimmy performed various odd jobs throughout the Golden Triangle area, as well as becoming a lifelong member of the Port Neches Masonic Lodge, and then pursued a career in law enforcement in 1969. Barbara Jean Kraus, 69, of Kingwood, died Sunday, December 10, 2023.  She was born on July 2, 1954, in Houston, to Angeline and Douglas Hayden. Barbara’s life work was dedicated to the health and care of others, serving as an RN and pediatric nurse practitioner for over forty years. Erma Cozene Baker, 86, of Kountze, died Saturday, September 23, 2023.  She was born on November 11, 1936, in Timpson Tx, to Mary Pauline Snelson Williams and Buford Elmo Williams. Cozene was a secretary and a faithful member of Kountze Church of Christ for over forty years.  She could grow anything with her green thumbs.  She enjoyed being a Mary Kay consultant for many years and she also helped her husband, Dwaine, with their store in Kountze, J&B Foods.  Cozene embodied the virtuous woman mentioned in Proverbs 31.  She will forever remain a loving wife, mother, and MawMaw. Today, we say farewell to our dear mother, sister, aunt, and friend. Margaret Rose (Selix) Davis, who arrived to this world on October 17, 1962, in Alice, TX. and departed after sixty years on September 19, 2023. Margaret saw herself as a loving mother, always thinking of her children first. She enjoyed cooking and hosting family and friends whenever they were near and never walked away from a good card game whether it was Uno, War, Hearts, Books, Spoons, or 10,000. We all have card stories to share! Margaret loved country music and began songwriting at the early age of ten and later taught herself to play the guitar, writing many songs with her dad. Rita Henley Williams, 68, of Saratoga, died Friday, September 15, 2023, in the arms of her beloved daughter, Heather. She was born on January 17, 1955, in Silsbee, Texas to Ruby Carlile Henley and Gilbert E. Henley. Rita was a life-long resident of the Silsbee area and a graduate of Silsbee High School. As an adult, Rita and her dad joked that his position with the Texas Highway Department seriously hindered her ability to get into trouble in high school because his work routes always coincided with her location when she wasn’t where she was supposed to be. Rita began her distinguished career at the Pines Theater in Silsbee where she served up tickets and snacks for family-friendly movies, and she served as a waitress at the Wagon Wheel Café.
